Exploring the Provinces Without MIR 2024 Award

On the exciting second day of MIR 2024 allocation, we not only find specialties waiting their turn, but also provinces eager to get started in this process. Despite having already assigned 1,800 order numbers, some provinces keep their MIR resident counter at zero, including the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

What are these Provinces in Waiting?

The map of ’emptied MIR Spain’ includes four provinces of Castilla y León: Ávila, Segovia, Soria and Palencia. Furthermore, in Castilla-La Mancha, the province of Cuenca is still waiting for its first resident. And in Aragón, both Huesca and Teruel also await with expectation.

The Rhythm of Distribution by Communities

Analyzing the progress, Castilla y León has distributed 8% of its places, with a total of 45 of the 544 available. Meanwhile, Castilla-La Mancha and Aragón advance with 8% and 16% respectively. This panorama will evolve as the assignment, scheduled until April 19, progresses.

Regions in the ’emptied MIR Spain’

José Luis Díaz Villarig, leader of the Council of Medical Colleges of Castilla y León, points out that these discrepancies are natural, referring to preferences for certain locations with better medical infrastructure. For his part, Jesús Ángel Martínez Burgui, president of the Teruel College of Physicians, highlights the importance of completing the MIR assignments, remembering past difficulties and showing optimism for this year.

Challenges in the Distribution of Places

Martínez Burgui recognizes the challenges of filling positions in areas such as Teruel and Cuenca, attributing part of the difficulty to the demographic situation. This problem is not limited only to MIR specialties, but reflects a broader situation in ’emptied Spain’.

Highlighted Communities in MIR Distribution

Among the communities with notable progress are Madrid, the Basque Country and the Valencian Community. Madrid leads with more than 26% of its assigned places, closely followed by the Basque Country and the Valencian Community.

Featured Specialties

Madrid, for example, has already assigned places in specialties such as Digestive System, while Valencia and the Basque Country stand out in Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology respectively.

Conclusions and Final Reflections

As the MIR process progresses, more details about the distribution of places will be revealed. However, it is clear that this year presents its own challenges and opportunities. The diversity of regions and specialties reflects the richness and complexity of the health system in Spain, leaving room for reflection and continuous improvement.
