A Personalized Approach in the Fight Against Diabetes

During the XXXV National Congress of the Spanish Diabetes Society (SED), Dr. Jesús Blanco, coordinator of the SED Genetics Working Group, highlighted the importance of ‘precision nutritional intervention’ in diabetic patients.

Although it is not yet widely applied in consultations, evidence supports this approach, according to Dr. Blanco.

This personalized approach considers not only weight reduction, but also genetic aspects and specific advice on diet, physical activity and medication.

The Importance of Genetics in Treatment

The HNF1A gene is emerging as a promising target for the treatment of different forms of diabetes, including monogenic and type 2 diabetes.

This discovery highlights the clinical overlap between different variants of the disease, according to the expert.

Advances in Prevention and Treatment

The 1st vice president of the SED, Dr. María José Picón, highlighted the progress in the understanding and treatment of diabetes in recent years.

A century ago, diabetes was considered incurable, but today the possibility of preventing and modulating the autoimmune system is emerging.

Dr. Picón emphasized the importance of adapting health strategies to incorporate these advances and provide adequate training in the area.

Addressing the Obesity Epidemic

The president of the Local Committee of Congress, Dr. Pablo López Ibarra Lozano, highlighted the close relationship between obesity and diabetes.

Despite this connection, obesity continues to increase without an adequate response, according to the expert.

Dr. López stressed the importance of detecting and addressing risk factors, including carrying out screening campaigns at the population level.

Regarding type 2 diabetes, significant advances have been achieved in the treatment and reduction of cardiovascular risk, thanks to new drugs.
