New Perspectives in the Treatment of Hemophilia

Dr. Mª Teresa Álvarez Román, specialist in hematology at the La Paz University Hospital in Madrid and president of the Scientific Commission of the Royal Victoria Eugenia Foundation (RFVE), has highlighted the significant advances in the treatment of hemophilia.

According to their statements, thanks to the innovative therapies available, a reduction in bleeding of up to 70% is being achieved, and a complete normalization of coagulation is envisioned with future treatments that are in development.

Commitment to Awareness and Education

The message was transmitted during the ‘Living with hemophilia today’ event, organized by the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy (SEHH), the Royal Victoria Eugenia Foundation (RFVE) and the Spanish Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (SETH), on the occasion of the World Hemophilia Day.

The event aimed to offer an updated perspective on the management of this condition and raise awareness about the challenges faced by patients with hemophilia.

In Spain, it is estimated that around 3,000 people live with hemophilia, a rare hereditary disease.

Individualization of Treatment

Dr. Álvarez Román emphasized the importance of adapting treatment to the individual needs of each patient.

With the variety of patient profiles, from those with vigorous physical activity to those with co-occurring medical conditions, careful selection of therapies is required to optimize outcomes.

The ultimate goal is to ensure that patients with hemophilia enjoy a quality of life comparable to that of the general population, freeing them from the negative impact of the disease.

Specialized Care for Pediatric Patients

Dr. Rubén Berrueco, hematologist at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona, focused on the specific needs of pediatric patients with hemophilia.

She highlighted the importance of providing health education to caregivers and actively involving children in their own care from 7 or 8 years of age.

To improve the experience of these patients, it is essential to provide emotional support to caregivers and adopt a playful approach so that children adapt to the necessary treatments.

Advances in pediatric treatments offer new options, including long-lasting clotting factors and less invasive delivery methods, improving patients’ quality of life.

Comprehensive Approach and Patient Participation

Dr. Berrueco stressed the importance of multidisciplinary care focused on the patient and his family.

By putting the patient at the center of care, unmet needs can be more effectively addressed and the overall well-being of those living with hemophilia improved.
