Important considerations before using cannabidiol (CBD)

Cannabidiol (CBD) offers numerous health benefits, but it is crucial to keep certain aspects in mind before use. It is advisable to consult with a health professional before starting consumption, since CBD can interact with other medications, altering their effectiveness due to its ability to deactivate or enhance cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes [[1]]. Additionally, combining it with alcohol can increase the risk of drowsiness and cause liver damage.

Side effects and precautions

The use of CBD can cause side effects such as dry mouth, tiredness, drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, changes in alertness, gastrointestinal discomfort, and mood disturbances [[1]] [[3]]. If these symptoms appear, it is recommended to discontinue use and seek medical advice.

Contraindications of cannabidiol

According to María Jesús Escribano García, technical-professional director of the Official College of Pharmacists of Madrid (COFM), cannabidiol is not suitable for children under 3 years of age, and caution is advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding, recommending consulting a doctor before of its use. Likewise, its consumption is not recommended in people with cardiovascular pathologies, especially arrhythmias, due to its depressant effect [[1]].

Recommendations for safe use

It is essential to verify the authenticity and quality of products containing CBD, avoiding those with insufficient quantities or of dubious origin. It is advisable to look for the words cannabidiol, CBD or hemp extract on the label, and avoid products that contain propylene glycol, a potentially harmful chemical additive. In addition, it is remembered that the marketing of CBD in food or as a dietary supplement is illegal according to the FDA. Dr. Jesús de Santiago Moraga, pain treatment specialist, emphasizes the importance of CBD treatment under medical supervision as part of a multidisciplinary approach, prescribed by a specialist with specific training [[1]].
