Sport plays a crucial role in the health and well-being of Spanish society. A recent study by the Center for Sociological Research (CIS) reveals that almost half of Spaniards, an impressive 47.9%, actively participate in sports activities. This data highlights the widespread recognition of the benefits of sport for physical, mental and social health.
Sports Habits of the Spanish
The CIS study also sheds light on the sporting habits of Spaniards. Among those who practice sports, the majority (33.3%) do it both alone and in a group, while 31.2% prefer to do it individually. 20.8% enjoy sports in the company of friends, which underlines the social aspect of physical activity.
Reasons to Practice Sports
The reasons for practicing sports are diverse. The main reason, cited by 74.9%, is the improvement or maintenance of health. Other notable reasons include maintaining physical fitness (28.2%), fun and leisure (27.6%) and the simple love of sport (27.3%).
Most Popular Sports
Regarding the most popular sports, walking occupies first place with 18.1% of practitioners. This is followed by maintenance gymnastics or Pilates (15.6%), cycling (15.1%) and running (13.8%).
Frequency and Places of Sports Practice
The majority of Spaniards who practice sports do so regularly. 70.3% say they do it three or more times a week, while 27.1% do it once or twice a week. Only 2% practice sports less frequently.
Gyms or private clubs are the most popular places to practice sports, with 39.7% of practitioners. This is followed by the countryside or natural spaces (31.9%) and public facilities (27.3%). A smaller percentage, 10.5%, practice sports at home.
The Positive Impact of Sport
Sport not only benefits physical health, but also has a positive impact on general well-being. 88.6% of those surveyed agree that sport helps break the monotony of daily life, while 91.1% affirm that it is a means to learn self-discipline. Furthermore, 95.8% agree that sport is a source of health that helps keep fit.
The Role of Public Sports Facilities
Public sports facilities play a crucial role in promoting sport in Spain. However, the CIS study reveals that 39.2% of those surveyed consider that they are insufficient for the needs of the population. This perception underlines the need to invest in quality sports facilities to encourage participation in sport.
The Desire to Improve Physical Fitness
One notable aspect of the study is the widespread desire to improve physical fitness. 57.9% of Spaniards say they would like to improve their physical condition, while only 14.9% do not worry too much about their current shape. This aspiration underlines the importance of promoting healthy habits and providing opportunities for people to participate in sporting activities.
Sedentary Habits and Daily Movements
The study also highlights the sedentary habits of a significant part of the Spanish population. Almost 40% of respondents say they spend most of the day sitting at work. Furthermore, 46.4% use private mechanical means for their daily trips, which limits physical activity. These findings highlight the need to promote more active lifestyles and reduce sedentary time.
