A new way to explore the city
The European city that has decided to follow in the footsteps of Cartagena is Brussels. This summer, it will become the first city on the continent to introduce electric carriages in its old town, leaving behind the use of horses as a means of traction to transport tourists.
The Brussels city council has promoted this initiative that will mark the end of the activity of the last three horses that still carry out walks through the center. These will be replaced by three new carriages equipped with electric motors, providing a modern and sustainable experience for visitors.
An example for other cities
According to the Brussels council, the introduction of these electrified carriages is a first in Europe. Fabien Maingain, Councilor for Economic Affairs, hopes that this initiative will serve as inspiration for other cities that wish to adopt similar measures to benefit animal welfare and the environment.
Well Done Company: leading the change
The company in charge of operating the new electric carriages is the renowned Well Done Company. Previously dedicated to the transport of horse-drawn vehicles, they have decided to adapt to this new form of mobility in response to the growing concern for animal welfare in Brussels.
Thibault Danthine, owner of the company, mentioned that concern for animal welfare was a determining factor in abandoning the use of horses. In addition, he noted that they also faced difficulties in finding personnel trained in handling horses and adequate spaces for them to rest in the city.
Brussels, at the forefront of animal welfare
Since 2021, the exploitation of ponies, donkeys, horses and mules has been prohibited at fairs or markets throughout the Brussels-Capital region. The Government of this region even has an Animal Welfare Department, focused on guaranteeing the care and protection of animals.
This measure has led the Well Done Company to adapt to new tourist mobility solutions, such as electric carriages. In this way, Brussels is at the forefront of promoting the respect and well-being of animals, while offering a unique experience to visitors.
A necessary change for the future
The introduction of electric carriages in Brussels marks an important milestone in the search for sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives. This step forward not only benefits animals, but also contributes to the reduction of polluting emissions and the promotion of responsible tourism.
