Calming properties of cannabis and its cannabinoid CBD
In this article, we are going to learn how to make a cannabis ointment that provides effective relief for muscles and joints. Unlike cannabis cosmetics, which we have already discussed in previous articles, we will focus on creating an ointment that is based on the calming properties of cannabis, specifically the cannabinoid CBD.
Hemp oil and its benefits for the skin
In previous articles, we have explored the nourishing, moisturizing and regenerating properties of hemp oil. However, in this case, we will use different vegetable oils to extract the CBD from the cannabis plant. This way, we can preserve the hemp oil for future uses in body oils, facial oils, and creams.
CBD extraction from cannabis
Since pure CBD can be expensive, we recommend obtaining it directly from the cannabis plant through a maceration process in vegetable oil. It is important to select a cannabis variety with a high concentration of CBD, such as those mentioned in previous articles (Tatanka pure CBD, Futura 75, etc.). In this case, we will use cheaper vegetable oils, such as olive oil or sunflower oil, to extract the CBD from the plant.
Selection of essential oil terpenes
In addition to CBD, the terpenes present in cannabis essential oil also have muscle relaxing, nervous system calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Although cannabis essential oil can be added to the ointment, the dosage required to obtain a quick and long-lasting effect can be expensive. However, these terpenes are also found in other essential oils.
The myrcene
This terpene, which makes up up to 50% of the total terpene content in some cannabis strains, has been shown to have muscle relaxing properties and relieve chronic pain and joint inflammation. We can obtain it from essential oils of juniper, lemongrass or oregano.
alpha-terpineol
Alpha-terpineol is a monoterpene found in lavender, juniper, marjoram, niaouli, and rosemary essential oils. It has muscle relaxing properties and is a general relaxant. Some essential oils rich in alpha-terpineol are pine, tea tree, niaouli, eucalyptus, and cayeput.
The ocimene
Ocimene is a terpene with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that relieves joint discomfort. Some essential oils rich in ocimene are oregano and thyme. You can select these essential oils to complete a good dose of calming and anti-inflammatory terpenes in your ointment.
Formulation of cannabis ointment
Ointments are slow-absorbing products, making them ideal for providing long-lasting relief to muscles and joints. These ointments are mainly composed of an oil and a fatty thickener. You can use different waxes (such as beeswax, carnauba, candelilla or soy), cetyl alcohol or stearic acid as thickeners. The amount of thickener will depend on how thick you want the pomade to be (usually between 15% and 25%). In addition, it is recommended to add around 10% essential oils to obtain a greater calming and anti-inflammatory effect. To prevent the oil from oxidizing, you can add vitamin E as an antioxidant.
Preparation of the ointment
Here is a simple but effective formula to make a soothing cannabis ointment for muscle and joint discomfort:
– Add the wax and oil to a heat-resistant container and heat it in a water bath at 80ºC until the wax melts.
– In another container, mix the essential oils and vitamin E.
– Once the wax has melted, remove the container from the water bath and wait for the temperature to drop to 60ºC.
– Add the essential oil mixture to the container with the wax, stirring gently.
– Wait for the ointment to thicken a little and then package it in a jar.
Conclusion
In summary, making a cannabis ointment to relieve muscle and joint discomfort requires the extraction of CBD from the cannabis plant and the selection of suitable terpenes from other essential oils. The ointment can be formulated using different thickeners and should contain a high dose of essential oils to maximize its calming and anti-inflammatory effect. Always remember to consult a doctor before using any skin care product or to relieve muscle discomfort. We hope you found this article useful!
