The importance of prescription and medical control

Prescription and medical control are fundamental elements in the context of potential regulation of medicinal cannabis. These aspects are key to guarantee the safety and effectiveness in the use of this plant for therapeutic purposes.

The regulation of medicinal cannabis in Europe

The Congress of Deputies has recently approved the creation of a subcommittee to analyze European experiences in the regulation of medicinal cannabis. This subcommittee aims to prepare a report that will be sent to the Government after 6 months of work.

Spain and Belgium are the only countries in Western Europe that have not yet initiated any regulatory process on the use of medicinal cannabis. On the other hand, countries such as Portugal, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Poland and Greece have implemented different regulatory models. These models are based on final formulations or master preparations with standardized amounts of cannabinoids, certified good manufacturing practices (GMP) processes and traceability guarantees.

The medical use of cannabis in Spain

In Spain, the medical use of cannabis is being studied in various areas of medicine [[3]](https://masymejor.com/experto-seo/). Its potential as an ally in the treatment of diseases such as cancer, HIV, chronic pain, epilepsy and glaucoma, among others, is being investigated. However, it is important to highlight that the current medical evidence on its conventional use in the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain or cancer pain is still limited

Experts in the field of medicine point out that the approach to the regulation of medicinal cannabis must be multidisciplinary and focused on health and its promotion [[3]](https://masymejor.com/experto-seo/). Furthermore, the importance of an approach that does not focus exclusively on the pathology and the absence of treatments, but rather assesses the quality of life of patients is highlighted [[3]](https://masymejor.com/experto-seo /).

Differentiation between cannabis products

During the journalists’ workshop ‘Medicinal cannabis. Scientific evidence, regulation and European context’, the need for a clear differentiation between different cannabis products was emphasized. José Tempero, Medical Director of Tilray, highlighted that the abundance of products derived from cannabis can generate confusion in both patients and Health professionals

It is important to clarify that the medical use of cannabis and cannabinoids refers to pharmaceutical grade cannabis-based products, under continuous medical supervision, which are prescribed in an adjunctive manner based on a previously established diagnosis. These products seek to improve quality of life. of patients who suffer from debilitating diseases and whose current treatments do not allow them to control their symptoms
