Cannabis regulation in Mexico
The regulation of the use of medicinal and industrial cannabis in Mexico has advanced significantly. Although the use in both areas is legal, there is a gap in the industrial area that, if not modified, could hinder the development of an industry valued at 5,000 million pesos, according to industry data.
Differentiation between hemp and cannabis
Experts who participated in the Business Investment Summit, organized by CannabiSalud, agree on the need to establish a clear distinction between hemp and cannabis. The first contains less than 1% THC, the psychoactive component of the plant, making it harmless to the nervous system. On the other hand, marijuana, with higher levels of THC, has medicinal properties that are already used in treatments for diseases such as epilepsy.
Importance of comprehensive regulation
The need to regulate all the substances present in the plant is highlighted, as well as for authorities to acquire in-depth knowledge about its uses. Despite the possible health risks associated with inappropriate use, it is highlighted that adequate regulation would allow the numerous benefits of these substances to be taken advantage of. The ban, on the other hand, prevents state control and exploitation of these qualities, according to Iñigo Olavarri, co-founder of Procanna Solutions.
