The Evolution of Cosmetics over the Centuries
Did you know that the word cosmetics comes from the word cosmos? That is, “relative to ornament.” This is where the current meaning comes from: “product used for hygiene or beauty of the body, especially the face.”
Since ancient times, humanity has sought to care for and beautify their skin. In ancient Egypt, more than 5,000 years ago, sesame and castor oils were used to protect themselves from the sun’s rays. The Greeks, for their part, in the year 1000 BC, hydrated their skin with olive oil and honey. The Romans incorporated roses, jasmine and lemon into their beauty routine.
However, during the Middle Ages, body worship was prohibited by the Catholic Church, considering it a sin. Its use was only allowed to those who suffered from an illness that caused them to be “unattractive.” Despite this ban, many people secretly applied almond oil to look younger and smoother skin. Even women used leeches to achieve a pale appearance, since light skin was in fashion back then.
It was from the 20th century onwards that the cosmetics industry experienced great progress. Between the years 1900 and 1930, the first skin creams began to be marketed, which caused a true boom in the industry. Since then, we have witnessed a constant evolution in the world of creams, with a wide variety of options for all skin types, both for the body and the face.
