Introduction

CBD and conventional marijuana (cannabis) are two cannabinoids present in the same plant, but there are clear differences between them. While CBD stands out for its benefits, conventional marijuana is known for its psychoactive effects.

Differences between CBD and conventional cannabis/marijuana

To understand the differences between these two substances, it is important to understand what they are and what their characteristics are. Both are the main active compounds of the Cannabis sativa plant.

What is CBD?

CBD is the substance to which most of the therapeutic benefits of hemp are attributed. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipsychotic and anxiolytic properties. In addition, it acts as a natural antiemetic and has a neuroprotective function. Unlike conventional marijuana, CBD has no psychoactive effects.

What is THC?

THC is the most psychoactive constituent of cannabis and is found in high concentration in conventional marijuana. Although antioxidant, analgesic, antiemetic and relaxing properties are also attributed to it, its main use is recreational. THC can alter the senses and increase appetite. However, its consumption is associated with a wide range of harmful health effects.

Different chemical disposition

Although CBD and THC have a similar molecular structure, their chemical arrangement is different. This causes the body to assimilate them differently. While THC directly affects the brain receptors responsible for controlling feelings, pain and mood, CBD has minimal interaction with the neurotransmitters that generate a feeling of well-being.

Medical benefits

CBD is widely used for medicinal purposes and is marketed in various legal presentations. Some of its main benefits include relieving the discomfort of arthritis, combating anxiety and other mood disorders, treating multiple sclerosis, improving sleep, reducing the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, and complementing cancer treatment. On the other hand, the health effects of THC are more controversial and vary depending on clinical trials.
