The Queen of the Sun: A Visionary Scientist

Mária Telkes, recognized as the Queen of the Sun, was a prominent biophysicist who revolutionized the field of solar energy with her innovative inventions. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the use of solar energy was not common, Telkes stood out for her vision and creativity in the design of solar devices.

One of his most famous creations was the Sun Dover House, a house built in Massachusetts, United States, 75 years ago. This pioneering house had a solar heating system designed by Telkes, which used the sun’s energy to heat the environment efficiently and sustainably.

A Legacy of Innovative Inventions

Telkes did not limit himself to the creation of solar heated houses, but also developed other revolutionary devices. During World War II, he devised a solar-powered inflatable desalination kit, which allowed salt water to be converted into drinking water. This invention saved lives by being included in the emergency medical kits of the US military.

Additionally, Telkes worked to expand and redesign its desalination technology to meet the drinking water needs of the Virgin Islands. His invention was acclaimed for its efficiency and contribution to the well-being of local communities.

A Historic Collaboration

The creation of the Sun Dover House was not the work of Telkes alone, but also involved the collaboration of two other visionary women. Eleanor Raymond, a noted architect, joined Telkes on this pioneering project. Amelia Peabody, a philanthropist and patron of the arts, provided the funding necessary to make this unique home a reality.

The Sun Dover House was a milestone in the history of solar energy, as it was the first house to exclusively use solar energy for heating. Unlike other projects of the time, which relied on auxiliary heat on cloudy days, the Telkes house used an innovative system based on sal mirabilis, which stored heat efficiently.

An Inspiring Legacy

Throughout her life, Mária Telkes continued to research and develop solar technologies. Her inventions included a low-cost solar oven, a solar air heater, and materials resistant to the extreme temperatures of space. Her passion and dedication to solar energy left an inspiring legacy and laid the foundation for future innovations in this field.

Mária Telkes, the pioneering solar energy scientist, demonstrated that the sun is an inexhaustible and sustainable source of energy. Her vision and creativity have left an indelible mark on the field of renewable energy and continue to inspire scientists and visionaries around the world.
